Sweet Summer

I think summer is finally here-in my mind at least! I know we've got a week or so until the calendar says it's official, but with the 90+ degree temps we've been having, it sure feels like summertime! We've spent the last week outside; barbecuing, bonfire-ing, taking walks, riding bikes (well...tricycles...) and sitting on the patio. It's been grand! And yesterday we were lucky enough to enjoy a perfect summer day. Here's what it entailed:

Lunch on a deck, with adults to talk to and good friends to laugh with! (Priceless!)

The first watermelon of summer...oh bliss!

Lots of fun pals to play with Iain to his heart's content!
(Thanks guys-he was asking about you all day today!)

A wonderful new friend for Liam.
Her name's Madisyn folks, and she'll be of babysitting age soon!
And she's awesome!

As if the day wasn't good enough already, we cooked up this fantastic summer dinner to cap it off. Buffalo chicken sandwiches, sweet potato fries and salad.
What more could a girl ask for?

A Tale of Two Brothers...

One is not as fat as we expected, and one is not as skinny as we feared! We took both boys to the Doctor yesterday, for their checkups, and they're both more "in the middle" than we thought.

Mr. Iain is about 27 lbs and almost 36 inches, which puts him in the 90th percentile for height, and the 75th for weight! He's such a skinny-minny that we were fearing he'd be about zero-th! However, since it's still not much more than the last time he was at the doctor, which was over six months ago, and considering the deficiencies in his picky-eater diet, we thought it was time to take action! So today I instituted "Operation Smoothie"! What a miracle-worker! Our boy, who has to be coerced to eat anything for breakfast, and who's never met a fruit or vegetable he likes gobbled down a full cup of smoothie! Strawberries, blueberries, bananas, OH MY! He's getting vitamins and nutrients he hasn't met since he was spoon fed! He ate another for lunch, and we're going to try mango-berry at dinner. I'm giving him about a week to enjoy them before I start sneaking in the vegetables. Who knows? Along with the gummy vitamins he gladly chomps every day, we may stave off the scurvy yet!

As for Mr. Liam, he's just over 18 lbs and over 28 inches. That puts him squarely above 95th for height, but only in 90th for weight! We thought he'd be off the charts, and are still surprised that there are 10% of babies bigger than him-although his wee cousin Calvin is one of them! Obviously there's not a percentile measurement for thighs, because Liam's would for sure be breaking records in that arena! And the good Doc gave us the go-ahead to start solids with Liam-he actually seemed surprised we hadn't yet, although he's just barely five months. He said that he seems ready, and thought it might even help with his spitting up. So rice-cereal is in our future, and the day he gets to eat real food will no doubt be Liam's best day ever!

It's always amazing to me how two brothers can be so different! They look different, they have different coloring, they're built different, their personalities are vastly different...! But they're brothers! And while Liam has looked at Iain with adoration for a few months now, Iain is finally getting to the point where he appreciates his little brother. He likes to play with him, help with him, make him laugh, show him things...It's really fun!

I'm glad to be your Mama, Little Boys!

F-U-N!

Not all of Mum and Dad's visit was work, work, work. We did have time for some fun in there! We celebrated Iain's birthday (twice!). We made lots of good meals, including some new things (Alton's from-scratch shrimp cocktail and seared tuna steaks!) and some old favorites (kebabs and steak au poivre, of course!). Dad and Neil went golfing a few times, and got to see the last two games of the Clark Cup Finals. Mum and I enjoyed pedicures (thanks Mik!!) and browsed around nurseries, garden stores and Target to our hearts' content, and the boys were just thrilled to have Grammie and Grampy here. But by the end of the trip, we all agreed it would be fun to take a little break! So we planned a fun Memorial Day Weekend getaway as the "last hurrah" of their trip.

Mom and Dad decided to take the "Lake Express" ferry home, which sails right across Lake Michigan, and cuts Chicago out of the trip. So we took off on Saturday for Milwaukee, with a stop on the way in Madison for breakfast, the Farmer's Market and browsing on State street. We stayed in a Staybridge, so we got to cook our own dinner that night (shrimp Alfredo pasta!) and didn't have to worry about dragging the boys out to a restaurant. We spent lots of time in the pool;Mom and I showed off our pedicures, Iain got to use his new "birthday snail" pool toy from Grandma and Grandpa, and Liam's swam for the first time! He took to it "like a duck to water"! He loved it! A lot more than Iain actually, although he was alright too once he got in, and both of them loved the hot tub! It was nice to just relax together. It was a great ending to the trip.

We were all very sad when we had to say good-bye to them on Sunday, and watch them sail off on their "big boat". It was a cold, dreary day, perfect for good-byes and moping, so after they were gone, we headed back to the hotel, took a nap, ate leftovers and went to bed early.

On our way home on Monday, we stopped at the Madison Zoo which Iain loved this time, as evidenced by the clapping and pointing in every picture he's in! Liam was not so hot on the zoo yet...and he was just plain hot, as it was the hottest day we've had this year. We went directly to the Pitmans for a Memorial Day BBQ, and it was fun to be able to be together...although we sure missed Stu and Becky and their crew. This was our first Memorial Day without them!

Here are some photos of the fun we had over the past few weeks!

DIY'n It

My parents are true DIYers. They can make, do, grow and fix almost anything. I've heard it from them both several times..."If you'd payed any attention at all while you were growing up, you'd know how to (fill-in-the-blank-with-task-I-am-currently-learning-about...)" and I know it to be all too true. If I'd watched and observed and learned, I'd have a wealth of information on building, assembling and repairing, cooking and baking, canning and preserving, gardening (vegetables and flowers!), sewing, mending and making...! You name it. But, of course I was not interested in doing any of these things until I had a home of my own. And of course, by then it was too late to learn it from them by osmosis. Luckily, in addition to being handy, they are also gracious with their skills. In fact, Neil and I both have talented parents who are willing to help us with any job that comes up, show us how to do things we don't know much about, teach about anything and everything, and (more often than not!) lend us the tools to complete the job!

We hit up our Pitman parents for advice on a regular basis, since they live here in town, and I'm pretty sure we need to start a log of all the tools we've borrowed! We've often come home from a trip to find an amazing, completed "project" that Dad has done in the yard, or they've both worked on in the house. It's always a nice surprise! And whenever my mom and dad come knocking at the door for a "vacation", we usually have a list of jobs as long as our arm. And they are always ready, willing and able to help us get them done. For all four members of the Rosedale Beautification Club...we are extremely thankful!!

The most recent visit of my Mom and Dad was no exception. Aside from the usual small jobs that pop up regularly, we tackled two big projects, one inside and one outside. (And I use the term "we" quite loosely, as my "help" was mostly confined to chasing a toddler, feeding a baby, and dressing, tending and diapering them both...!)

Project #1: Bathroom Reno
Our (tiny) bathroom had been having trouble for a while. If you look in the "before" picture, you may notice a crooked toilet, a dingy, faded wood floor, and an older, worn-out vanity. But you won't necessarily see the leaking produced by the crooked toilet and decrepit vanity. This began as a simple fix-it job; just stop the leaks in both fixtures, and spruce it up a little. But once we saw the damage to the floor from several decades of leaks, we decided it was time to replace it. And once we were ripping out the vanity to replace the floor, it only made sense to replace that too. It was quite a project (as evidenced from the toilet-in-the-tub photo!), but it sure looks great now that it's done. We chose an beautiful multi-colored slate tile floor, and a curved wood and porcelain vanity that is much smaller than our old one. The curve of the sink matches the curve on the old cast-iron tub, which is now exposed because there's more room. We love it!! It's hard to get a really good "after" photo in a 25 square-foot space, but it really does look amazing, and we're so thankful for all the time Dad took from golfing and morel-ing to do it for us, and for the hours Mom and Dad spent on their knees, installing that beautiful floor!

Project #2: Vegetable Garden Creation
I've wanted a vegetable garden for years now. But with our plethora of wildlife (deer, rabbits, woodchucks, racoons etc.) the challenge was always figuring out how to protect the tender little plants from the big marauding invaders, while finding a location that gave enough sun, without sticking a huge fenced plot in the middle of the yard. We think we found the perfect solution though! We decided to make use of the wasted space directly behind the garage, and have it multi-task for us, by making the garage wall into one side of our "deer fence", and also a climbing wall for beans. We fenced two more sides, used our existing wood pile as the fourth, added a gate and called it good! So far...no animal tracks! I think it's secure! And it's so, so cute! Dad put up the fence, (with Iain's help of course!) and tilled the ground. We then made a raised bed with wood sides, filled it with soil (I have recently learned this is proper terminology...not "dirt"...!), plotted it out, and got planting! My mom was the brains behind the operation, and she somehow managed to squeeze three kinds of tomato plants, red, yellow, green and orange bell peppers, jalapeno, cayenne and habanero peppers, two kinds of lettuce, radishes and carrots, yellow and red onions and leeks, climbing cucumbers, potatoes, snap peas and green beans and a path down the middle into my little 12x6 space! This is without mentioning the rhubarb, strawberries and asparagus along the back that are perennial, and the cherry tomato, zucchini plants and herb garden (basil, oregano, rosemary, cilantro, dill, chives, mint and chocolate mint) that reside outside the fence! I love, love, love it!! We already have lettuce, onions and radishes poking up their little heads, and I can't wait to taste the "fruits of our labors"!

In our "spare time", we also did some backyard beautification. Mom and I planted flower planters, weeded, mulched and added perennials to the beautiful flower garden Dad P designed and built over the past few years, and bought and hung a hummingbird feeder. Dad put together our new Adirondack chairs and strung lights on our pergola (a Spring 2009 Patterson project!). Neil did the mowing and trimming and rust-proofed our new fire pit! Our backyard is ready for summer...now Mom and Dad just need to come back for another two weeks to enjoy it!

There is really no way to say thank-you for all the time, effort and energy expended by both sets of our parents on our behalf over the years...but we are very grateful for the work, the time, the help...and the legacy of DIY'n that you've shared with us! Someday, I'm sure we'll even be able to do it on our own...!

Two!

Two!
(For Iain)

You're two, you're two! Iain is two!
Hooray for wonderful, marvelous two!

A party was had, with drums and guitars,
And cupcakes and cookies, and lots of stars.
A ride on a bus was your birthday treat,
And yummy pizza what you chose to eat!
A sick little boy, and grumpy too,
But we had to celebrate, because Iain is two!

You're two, you're two! Iain is two!
What has the last year held for you?

You've learned to sleep...most of the time!
You've learned to walk, and run, and climb!
You've learned to talk, and talk some more,
You've learned to eat...but you find it a bore.
You've learned your manners, when they serve you well,
And you've learned that your people are pretty swell!

You're two, you're two! Iain is two!
This is really something new!

You're our little boy, but you're getting so big
You love to help Mama in the garden dig.
You say "Iain is fixin' very hard"
As you work by Daddy's side in the yard.
You'll help with the laundry, or washing a dish,
You're growing up faster than we'd wish.

You're two, you're two! Iain is two!
You're good at so many things...here are a few!

Your words, they are many! They come spilling out!
You're talking in sentences, without any doubt.
Your golfing game is right on par,
And you can hit a puck quite far.
You've got rhythm for the guitar and the drum,
And you bring so much joy to your dad and your mum.

You're two, you're two! Iain is two!
We love you so much, we truly do!

You've got personality, you've got heart!
You're so very sweet, and so very smart!
A good big brother, a wonderful son,
Filled with laughter and joy and fun.
We can't imagine our life without you...
And we can't believe that you're already two!

You're two, you're two! Iain is two!
Hooray for wonderful, marvelous two!

Five Big Ones

Well Mr. Liam, you're five months old today! May was a big month for you! You learned how to roll over, and are very close to sitting up on your own! You got your first two teeth and survived your first cold, with barely a peep of protest! You met your Uncle Stu for the first time, enjoyed a nice long visit from Grammie and Grampy, celebrated Big Brother Iain's birthday, and missed Daddy for a whole week while he was away for work. You stayed overnight at a hotel for the first time, swam in a pool for the first time (and loved it!), and took your first trip to the zoo. You did all of these things in typical Liam fashion-with a big smile on your face, and without any trouble at all!

We've shipped off another box of clothes to Cousin Cal, as you continue to grow and grow. You go to the Dr. tomorrow, and I am very interested to see what you now weigh. You're wearing mostly 6m clothes, but 9m fits just fine, and even bigger stuff doesn't look like you're playing dress-up in your big brother's britches. Currently, it's the thighs that are cause for amazement...the rest of you has thinned out a little, but those thighs! I've never seen so many rolls and dimples! You've been putting those cute, strong thighs to good use though. You've begun using your Jolly Jumper, and loooove to jump, jump, jump! You also do the same motion in the bathtub, frog kicking from one end of the tub to another, accompanied by smiles, squeals of delight, and lots of splashing!

You continue to sleep well-even teething and a chest cold didn't disturb your good sleep habits! We are very thankful for that. Clearly you are a lower-maintenance kid than your brother! You were back in the pack'n'play for several nights this month, between trips and guests, but it didn't phase you one bit. You seem able to sleep anywhere. You're very adept at breaking out of your blankets now...I think the swaddle's days are numbered.

You still coo and gah and laugh and chat constantly...you're working on new sounds all the time, and it's so fun to hear you practice them. You are such a cheerful, social, friendly, fun baby! Everywhere we go, you make new friends with your adorable chubby cheeks, your toothy grin, and your happy little noises!

I think the next month is going to be a busy one for you too-we'll keep working on the rolling over, and I'm sure that sitting alone is in your near future as well. With all those teeth (and more on the way!), I guess it's about time to start the solid food...but we can't go straight to steak Mr. Liam! We've gotta work on some purees first! Can't wait to see what the next month holds for you, little boy! You make every day such a delight!
