Canadian Vacation 2011

After much ado...the recap of our Canadian Grand Tour. I've honed the photos down from the thousands we took, and then again (at Neil's urging!) from the 60 I wanted to include. And while I'd love to write out every last detail...every meal we made, every fish we caught (...come to think of it...that one wouldn't take all that long...!), every boat trip we took, all the funny things that were said, the stories, the moments, the memories and all, so we won't forget what a wonderful trip it was...I won't. Because I know that all the details and pictures in the world wouldn't do justice to the great time we had! And I know that even without all the photos and details, that this post will already be too long to hold most people's attention. (Most of you are probably skimming already!) But just know that it's less wordy than it was...and has considerably less pictures than I wanted!

Wednesday at noon we headed off for the Great White North, via the UP and Iron Mountain, Michigan. We stayed over at our standard Holiday Inn Express hotel, swam in the pool, ate pizza and slept like babies. And the babies slept too. Thursday we left as early as we could rouse ourselves, finished the trip (with the traditional stop at the ol' chip stand en route for some "Welcome to Canada" poutine!) and arrived at the cottage just in time for Iain to drive us across the lake in the glorious sunset!

Friday we celebrated Canada Day by donning our reddest duds, enjoying pancakes and pure Canadian maple syrup, barbecuing our dinner, and watching fireworks over the lake. Liam also had his very first "meal", on his half birthday and Canada's 144th. As mentioned previously, he took to it like a duck to water. I think he was just disappointed he wasn't getting in on the pancake breakfast and steak dinner!

Saturday was Brett and Breha's 6th anniversary, so we had a special dinner, complete with a nice bottle of wine of the same vintage as their marriage! We are so lucky to have a brother and sister who don't mind spending their anniversary with us every year!

Sunday we took a longer trip the "the sand beach" a few miles down the lake, forgetting that on a holiday weekend, one of only a handful of beaches in a 20 mile radius might be a little packed! So we hung out on the boat, swam off the boat, and looked at some amazing eagle's nests. We also let Iain try out a sparkler for the first time! Call it early for the fourth or late for Canada Day...we just didn't think of it until the 3rd! He loved it!

Monday the guys moved part of the dock out into the lake onto a sandbar for a swim dock. We shuttled ourselves back and forth (or more accurately, Brett shuttled us!) and we all enjoyed the afternoon swimming, fishing and lounging in the sun and on the sand.

Tuesday we headed to "the other" sand beach, and this time we struck pay-dirt! It was empty, so we had the run of the place; fishing, picking blueberries, lounging and playing Huck Finn in the sand. We left in time for Brett and Breha to pack up and head home, and for Iain to fall and smack his face on the stud wall of the cabin, thereby earning him his first official black eye, or "smackaroonie". (Check out his cowboy picture later on for a good view...)

Wednesday was our only rainy morning, so went into "town" to replenish our supplies, visited the driving range, took naps and laid low. In the evening we headed back to the far-away beach, finding it empty this time and played until almost dark. This fateful decision ushered in our annual "Three Hour Tour". On the way back...we ended up with a broken boat, and a tow home. (Happens every year!)

Thursday we enjoyed our last day by spending the whole of it outside; swimming at the dock, fishing off the boat, and chasing daylight home. Liam had a grand ol' time floating around in the shallows off the dock. And in typical fashion, at the last minute of the last day, Iain finally got brave enough to jump of the dock. He also fished for his first (and last) time of the trip!

Friday we packed up and headed "south" to Mom and Dad's house in Niagara. After unpacking and getting ourselves gussied up (well...compared to the non-showered, swim-suited cottage look anyway!), we met Deborah at Henry of Pelham Winery for the annual "Shakespeare in the Vineyard". This summer's performance was Midsummer Night's Dream and while it wasn't Broadway by any means, for us it was really great!

Saturday morning we had "Big Grampy" over for breakfast. Every time we're there, I'm conscious of the fact that at 95 years old, this could very well be the last time we're with him. He's such an important person in my life, and I so badly want my boys to know him. We took the chance to let him snuggle Liam for a while, and he entertained Iain by bopping a balloon around with him for about half an hour. He's still laughing about Big Grampy and the balloon. It was so fun to watch! That evening we had a barbecue with a ton of friends; close, distant, old and new...where the children very nearly outnumbered the adults. It was fun. And crazy. (Check out all those babies! There were also a couple toddlers and a few preschoolers in the mix, just to keep things interesting!)

Sunday we got up (not as early as we usually do, because we just couldn't bring ourselves to leave...) and made the long and laborious trek back to hot and humid ol' Iowa, with a stop on the way at Beef-A-Roo! (Nothing like a little kitsch (and grease) to console depressed travelers!)

So..that's it. That's what we did. But the things we did don't quite capture the feel of the trip, and that is what made it great. It really was the perfect trip. There's really nothing like it...everyone pitching in to help; everyone laid back and having fun; everyone reading, napping, eating and laughing together! It was a great balance of things to do and nothing to do, work and play, catching up with old friends and spending time with family. We made lots of yummy recipes, snuggled babies, had campfires, read books, fished, swam, sunned and relaxed. It was delightful. Everybody in our family just got to do the things we liked best, with people we loved...and that made it perfect.

Liam did a lot of eating (he loves his oatmeal!), and spent a lot of time lounging around in various stages of sleep and wakefulness, with assorted combinations of props including the bouncy chair, towel, life jacket, soother and bug net. He also swam and was just as good as gold the entire time. We're getitng slightly nervous about what his teen years will be like, because he's certainly never given us a lick of trouble so far! He was so happy to have so many people around, and someone paying attention to him all the time!

Iain swam, fished, ran and played in the sand to his hearts content. He did a lot of driving the boat, "fixin' very hard" with Uncle Brett and Grampy...and a lot of wearing of any and all odd articles of clothing. He also spent a LOT of time exploring and romping with Auntie Beyoo, and snuggling, taking hikes and playing "Grand Old Duke of York" with Grammie although I don't have near enough good pictures of that. He was pretty good, although he had his moments! Guess that's all you can ask for in this stage of life known as the Terrible Twos. Or, to quote a certain witty friend: "Mom...all this entertainment comes at a price!"

Neil spent most of his time fishing, reading and swimming. He also enjoyed being able practice his cheffery and spend time with the kiddos without having to squeeze it in on weekends and evenings. I think he was just glad to be on vacation!

As for me...I obviously spent my vacation behind the camera lens, as there are not many pictures to prove I was there at all! But I love my title as family photographer, so one more occasion of everybody doing as we liked! I also read and napped a lot, and swam and fished a little. I loved it all, but most of all I loved being able to spend time with my family, which I don't get nearly enough of! It was also nice to have so many helping hands around to bathe babies, feed babies and put babies to bed. It was fun to be able to get to do things (like make the delicious cinnamon rolls below!) without a child on one hip! And I love knowing that for them, who don't see their grandchildren and nephews often, helping with them is a treat, not a chore! (And for me...sometimes cleaning up a kitchen while someone entertains my boys is a treat, not a chore! So...win/win!)

We're so thankful for our family, so thankful for the time we had...and as always, whenever our annual cabin vacation is over...whenever we return from a trip like this...we're already counting down to next summer.

Whew...

Lately...

Spent ten fun filled days in the Motherland
Been home for nine days...and just got the laundry put away
Crammed eight people in our three bedroom house to sleep for a weekend
Became a family of seven (If you count Ella! And for the next two days anyway!!)
Made six Harry Potter themed recipes
Stayed up five hours past our bedtime to attend the midnight premiere
Welcomed back four of our beloved Pitmans to Iowa
Baked three key lime pies
Had a grown-up sleepover with two of our favorite friends
Met one new nephew (finally!)

All this to say...we've had a lot going on! I'd better get blogging!

On Returning from Vacation...

We're home. With another 1725 miles under our belt, and 10 fun-filled days of memories, we're back from our Canadian Grand Tour. Photos are forthcoming, but for now, here are some questions we answered and life-lessons we learned on the way.

-Is it possible for a six month old baby to take a 750 mile, two-day, 15 hour road trip without making a single peep? Yes. Thank you Liam...you rock!
-The best solution for getting a good night's rest for Mama, Daddy, toddler and baby in a single hotel room is to put the toddler in his own "special bedroom". As he will quickly point out, it's a bathroom. You can just say "Yes, it's sort of like a bathroom. But for tonight, it's your special bedroom." This solution also works well at cabins.
-Celebrating Canada Day in Canada, after many years away...awesome!
-Missing 4th of July, the annual Garnavillo parade and a sweet block party...not so awesome. But if you're in Canada, you might not remember it's even the 4th until well after noon.
-Can a six month old and a two year old share clothing? If the baby is Liam and the toddler is Iain, and the clothing in question is a swim-shirt and trunks...apparently, yes.
-No matter how cold the water is, Liam will never make a peep, cry real tears, or kick up a fuss. No matter how warm the water is, Iain will always scream, cry or have a fit. Then he'll like it. It's just their personalities.
-No matter what the activity, and no matter how hard you try to convince him, Iain will always wait until the last minute to like it. It's just his personality.
-If your baby's been watching you eat with great interest for the last month or so, he will take to solid food like a duck to water. No big ordeal for this boy...it hardly merited a video.
-You will never spend a week at the cabin without getting towed somewhere on a broken pontoon boat.
-If you're planning on fishing, always take more minnows than you think you'll need!
-A fall into a 2x4 studded wall will sure produce a shiner on a little boy. Tell him he looks like a hockey player and give him a drink of Ovaltine, and he'll be better in no time.
-Watching your kid doing anything for the first time (jumping off the dock, playing with a sparkler, fishing) is pretty great.
-Shakespeare plays are definitely better enjoyed in a vineyard, with good friends and a bottle of Baco Noir.
-Barbecues with old friends aren't the relaxing affairs that they used to be, now that there are 10 or so kids running around. But they're a lot of fun!
-There are some friends who just "feel right", even though you don't see them for weeks, months, years.
-No matter how long you're "home", it's never long enough.
-It makes it easier to come back from vacation knowing that you have a nephew to meet, a niece to squeeze, a sister to catch up with and a brother with a brand-spankin' new job! In Iowa! Not in North Carolina!!!!
-Just because your kids are well behaved and cooperative on the first leg of the trip, does not guarantee that the miracle will repeat itself on the return journey. Gah.
-When you come back to Iowa in July, after spending a wonderful week in breezy, beautiful Canada, and step out of the car into 100 degree heat, 95% humidity and annoying allergies, you will always wonder why you don't just get back in the car and head straight back to Canada.
-Aforementioned relocated family, spice-treats from Penzey's, an amazing jungle of promising produce in a garden (watered by awesome neighbors with plans for fun up their sleeves!), an affectionate kitty who missed you and a little air conditioning will do a lot to reconcile you to sticking it out another day. Or maybe it's just the dreaded prospect of 13 more hours in the car.

Ode to the Dads

I'm sad to be a day late on this post. It's tough to find time to blog when you're the one doing the pampering, instead of being pampered! But I would be remiss if I did not take time to mention the men in my life that I am thankful for on Father's Day! So here's a short (and late!) Father's Day poem in their honor.

To Dob-Dobby, my own Dad!
A better Daddy was never had.
With your handy hands you fix,
But still have time for Iain's tricks.

For Dad P, my Dad in "law"
My second Dad, and a great Grandpa!
You do all you can for us,
And love us lots, without much fuss!

For my Grampy, I sure love you!
And Papa, gone on to Heaven too.
You've taught me many things in life,
About the long road of joy and strife.

For my brother, an uncle who's lots of fun,
A wonderful Daddy to a child soon to come.
You're the best, my "little big bro",
I hope you know that I love you so!

Two brothers-in-law, smart and great I see,
One fabulous Daddy, and one soon to be!
Two Uncles with love for two little boys,
To entertain, and play with toys.

One nice husband, a Daddy of two-
Without this man, oh what would I do?!
Adored by his sons, and his wife as well,
A wonderful Dad, he sure is swell!

Sure am thankful for all of these guys! And Dads? If poetry's not your style, I'll just wish you a "Happy Falker Satherhood" instead.

New Buddies!

It's been a rough few days Chez Pitman. With a sick little boy, complete with a fever, some barf and a couple of sleepless nights, we've been laying pretty low. I don't think we would have made it without these two pals. Iain has found a new obsession. We've read through our anthology many times, and checked out every other story the library had available! He never gets tired of them. Meet our new best friends: "Cure-dee-us George" and "The Man with the Yeyo Hat"!

All Growed Up

It's crazy. It's like Iain turned two and decided he was big. In the last few weeks, I'm astounded at the number of things he's done, tried and eaten without protest, fuss or complaint. Things that he'd previously decided he didn't want to do, was scared to try or wouldn't eat. He's back on the potty wagon, for one. (Although I'm not holding my breath on that one lasting!) Don't know what the difference is, except that we pulled out the green potty last night instead of the red one! Now don't get me wrong, he's still a two-year-old in any and all senses of the word! It has not been an "easy-breezy" few weeks! But I'm loving this cooperative, adventurous, up-for-anything side of him!

For instance: our fun neighbors (Thanks Candace and Michael!) participated in "Bike to Work Week" and got Iain this snazzy bike helmet. (They actually thought it would come in handy for his extreme-golf games!) But Iain refused to put it on! On Wednesday though, when we brought out his tricycle and I told him frankly that when we ride bikes we need to wear helmets, and he put it on without a fuss! He hopped on that trike and pedaled away to his heart's content! (Don't mind the grouchy face! He was concentrating! And don't mind the messy shirt...he'd just eaten a chocolate chip cookie in the 90 degree heat!)

And the eating! Oh the eating! Ever since I instituted "Operation Smoothie" about a week ago, he's been eagerly slugging one (or two or three!) back a day. We've had strawberry-blueberry, strawberry-banana, mango-blueberry, banana-mango and every flavor combination in between, and he loves them all! We've even been adding spinach for the last few days, and it hasn't made a dent in his enthusiasm. In addition, in the last week he's tried (and liked) watermelon, strawberries (minus the liked part on the strawberries!), quinoa, steak, mushrooms, bratwurst, salami, fruit popsicles, herbal tea, flax seed cakes, Laughing Cow cheese and a host of other things. I say "Try this Iain!" and he does. It's amazing! He even asks for (and eats!) carrots and apples with his lunch! I'm so happy that he's eating such a wide variety of food and getting so many good (and different!) nutrients! However, as you can see below, chocolate is still a food of choice for this boy!

And the little one? He's having a hard time with his teeth lately. He's been up in the night a couple of times, which is unusual for him, and he gnaws wet spots the size of basketballs on any fabric he can get his hands (gums!) on! It makes me so sad to see him fussy. I can tell that he's in a lot of pain, as he's generally never cranky. He's still a cutie little chubster though, and as we know from Iain, "this too shall pass"! As for being "all growed up"? Well, all of a sudden, he seems to think he's big enough to hold his own bottle!
